Beaune City Exploration

Today's highlight was a tour of Hotel Dieu, Hospises de Beaune, a hospital built in the 15th century to serve poor people. It operated for 500 years, until the 1970's. The hospital treated several hundred people a year with a staff of doctors and nuns. Included with the hospital was a large church.

Many of the original buildings, furnishings, instruments and art was on display along other "newer" pieces dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. The tour using an audio system, was very informative and provided a glimpse into the state of the art medical treatment of centuries ago. In addition we got a sense of what it took to support the community within the hospital--the food preparation, the spiritual services and many others aspects of maintaining a cloistered population.

The works of art including tapestries were breathtaking. As were the pieces of furniture dating back several hundred years.

Each November, the Hospice hosts a major wine auction that features some of the top wines of Burgundy. The Hospice founders planted grapes in the mid-1400's and have a distiguished line of wines which is another way of saying they are expensive.

Our other tourist stop was the Basilica de Notre Dame. It's hard to tire of seeing old churches and all the elements of worship that go with them. Notre Dame had the usual unique architectural features and included an exhibit of ancient tapestries that was unbelieveable.

After a very nice reception held in the courtyard of our hotel, we had a dining experience for the ages. It was more than three hours of consuming delicious foods. And the price was really not that bad. The restaurant and attached hotel is owned by the son of the owners of our hotel.

We do our first wine tasting tomorrow and plan to hit the farmer's market before heading into the countryside.
